Just wanted to share a quick story that happened to me a few days ago in order to help you deal with negative people who are trying to kill yo' vibe. The other day I received an email notification saying that someone had opted in to receive a free website analysis on my web design portfolio website (http://mattkohn.me). The individual didn't end up booking a meeting, so I figured I would follow up and see if I could assist. I reached out and the individual emailed me back saying that he was in need of design work, but he said my website was a mess, so clearly I wouldn't be able to help him out. I was a bit taken aback at first, thinking to myself, who the hell is this dude? However, I kept my cool, and figured I would reach out in order to get feedback and see where I can improve. I sent an email back asking for feedback. He actually provided me with some useful insights that highlighted some issues with my current site, which was exactly what I was looking for. I thanked him for his feedback, then asked him how he came across my site. He mentioned that he had found me through Upwork and after seeing that my rates were the highest, he was curious as to what his investment would get him. He then went on to tell me that he had a look through my portfolio, and concluded that $8/hr contractors from India had better portfolios than me. *OOOOOOOOOOH SNAP, SON!* As expected, I was slightly pissed off. But I brushed it off, then reached back out again. I thanked him for his feedback and asked if he could refer me to the $8/hr contractors who had better portfolios as I am always looking for quality contractors. Was I trolling him? Maybe a bit. But if these $8/hr high quality contractors were actually out there, I wanted to know about it so I could use them for future projects. (I still haven't heard back from him yet, oh well...) In conclusion, I didn't know this guy, but he was certainly coming off strong and criticizing my work that I had spent a lot of time on. However, at the end of the day, your perception of these negative or overly critical people is the ONLY thing that matters. You can react from an emotional standpoint and internalize this negative feedback, or you can move the emotions over to the side, see the situation for what it is, and use the opportunity as a learning experience. The choice is up to you- but I can tell you the last option certainly is the one that benefits you the most. PS. fix your perception so you don't let the haters uh get to you good morning guys it's 9:00 a.m. here in medine I'm at my this awesome Cafe again and I wanted to just briefly kind of discuss um how to handle uh negative people how to um fix your perception so you don't let the haters uh get to
you um so the other day I had I received an email notice uh saying that someone had opted in to receive a free website analysis on my web design portfolio site um I didn't end up hearing from them they didn't end up following through and booking the meeting so I I I figured I would reach out and
see um if I could help in any way so I sent the individual an email and he replied back and said yes I need help with a website but your site looks like a mess so you won't be able to do me any good and uh initially I was like well [ __ ] who the [ __ ] is this guy
but after you know after that initial emotional reaction I tried to see the situation as it was and um I figured you know look I don't know who this guy is so why don't I just reach back out to him and uh see if he can provide me with uh feedback about how to improve my site so
that's exactly what I did um he provided some good feedback and and there was some truth to his feedback as well which which was exactly what I was after um and then I followed up and I asked him you know uh where did you come across my website um and he told me upwork which was is formerly
Elance it's just a platform for Freelancers and he said I noticed that you were one of the most expensive options and I figured hey why not see what my investment will get me um and so he went on to say that he had to look at my site and then he said that um turns out that 8
Hour contractors had better portfolios than me um and again this guy was kind of laying it on hard and and uh I was again I was I was pissed off a bit but um after again letting the emotions uh clear from the situation I tried to look at the situation objectively and um I reached back out and
I said look Josh I well all right names out whatever I said look Josh I really appreciate the feedback um always trying to improve um would you be able to introduce me to those eight hour contractors who have better portfolios than me um was I trolling him maybe a little bit but at the same time if there
are people out there who have better portfolios than me at $8 an hour then I need to know who they are so that I can Outsource projects to them because that makes a lot of sense um but just to kind of wrap things up here again you know when people kind of confront you uh aggressively or negatively
it it really all comes down to our perception of one are they right or two um who who are they are are they do they have any legitimacy or that sort of thing and you know again this guy he was a little bit overly aggressive but um I can view it as that way and say hey look
[ __ ] this guy or I can view it as okay sure maybe this guy's aggressive but at the end of the day I can learn something from him so that was the approach I took and I ended up getting some good feedback even though um even though I still haven't heard back from him about the 8 Hour contractors
you know I'm looking forward to looking forward to that because uh if they're out there I want to know where they are but um but anyways just thought I would share that with you guys
