About this video

Last week I had the pleasure to speak on a 4-person panel at COWORKRS NYC Techweek event about overcoming fear as an entrepreneur. The entrepreneurial lifestyle is as scary as it is rewarding. To quickly summarize what I discussed: fear is due to a lack of confidence due to a lack of experience. The fix: purposely expose yourself to uncomfortable situations to keep pushing your limits. This develops the mental resilience needed to handle bigger challenges in the future. --- Thanks for watching. but I decided to quit my job and move down to Colombia I was [ __ ] bricks so earlier this week I had the pleasure the opportunity to speak on a panel at co-workers Gawain this location gowanus Grannis I'm not sure as part of their technique of event series and it was a super awesome experience it was my first

time really speaking in front of people and I think there was over 100 people there and the topic ironically was overcoming fear and I was quite kind of fearful of speaking in front of that many people but it turned out to be just fine as does most things that we kind of psych ourselves out of Alvin I

just wanted to kind of recap what I talked about because overcoming fear is something that is HUGE frosh canoers but not allow foreigners for anyone really who wants to achieve anything worthwhile in their life so many of us choose our paths out of fear disguised as practicality so many of us choose our path out of fear disguised

as practicality it's so tragic because so many of us we just kind of go down this path that has been carved out before us and we never ask why we never asked what are we doing we never ask why am i spending the majority of my time in my life doing this thing that does not fulfill me

that does not motivate me that does not excite me overcoming fear something that anyone has to deal with who wants to get out of that safe path because that's unfortunately where a lot of us live our entire lives and there's always a lot of fear and anxiety around kind of taking these big career moves or quitting our

jobs or taking a trip or or anything like that and though the main reason for this fear is due to a lack of confidence but I decided to quit my job and move down to Colombia I was [ __ ] bricks I was absolutely scared but I was also very excited and I also had the little bit of self

confidence that I needed to overcome that fear because ironically a few months prior my business failed and that was a business that I started with a 19 year old that I met on Craigslist and I know I'm the biggest dumbass in the world but look that opportunity has led to where I'm at now and that failure has

led to me being able to make many more thousands of dollars back since then because I've learned what not to do and so I tell you that story because those are the types of experiences that allow us to believe in ourselves those are the types of experiences that allow us to gain the confidence that we need to

overcome fear there's this old thing in psychology we call the competence confidence loop the more you understand something the more confidence you have in that area same thing with anything that does happen to impulsively generate some fear in yourself well now once you understand what it is you can deal with it better in the same way that

you go to the gym and you add weight gradually over time for example let's say you want to increase your bench press you're going to go in let's say over two three four weeks and each time you're in there you're going to gradually increase the weight because when you do that you're increasing the threshold of what your

muscles can tolerate and by doing that you're allowing them to grow and get stronger and so that's a perfect example for how we can gain the confidence that we need to overcome fear because by exposing ourselves to uncomfortable situations and just taking that little step just a little bit further and further and further beyond what we're normally

used to that is where we're able to gather that confidence to know that I took this decision it's not that much further than that previous decision I turned out okay I can do this I'll be good that was the exact opposite said I had when I was quitting my job moving in Columbia I had already failed business

and I could look back on that experience and know that okay I already failed that's the worst possible outcome I've already failed and I'm still here I'm still good my family still loves me I still have friends I still have all my limbs like we're good and so being able to draw back on that gave me the

confidence that I needed to believe in myself for this trip to Colombia and now looking back since then I've been able to make it work and now the belief in myself has just kind of exponentially rose because now it's like look I jumped out the window and I made it work and I know that whatever obstacles i

encounter in the future i'm going to be just fine because i have that life experience to look back on and understand that i can figure it out I have the confidence to know that and that's what differentiates successful people from unsuccessful people unsuccessful people when they have a big dream and they start thinking about what's going to

be required to accomplish that dream they get very limiting in their beliefs about themselves and what's possible you know the first thing they often say as well you know I don't know how to do that so they stopped but successful people say well I want to do that but I don't know how to do that but instead

of stopping they say well then my job is to go learn that the successful mindset says I don't know how to do that thing but I'm going to figure it out and I have the confidence to know that I'm gonna make it work so just to kind of recap the reason that you're fearing this decision this new

transition this huge change is because you don't believe in yourself because you haven't given yourself the opportunity to believe in yourself so the fix to that is to slowly but surely expose yourself to the uncomfortable situations that allow you to grow and by doing this over time you're able to take further and further and bigger and bigger

steps outside of what you're normally used to and that is where you're going to see the serious growth and the serious development so that's all I have for you today if you enjoyed this video please do subscribe we've got a lot of awesome content coming very soon such as an interview series with New York Times bestselling authors
